Christian Joy (3) Your Name in All the Earth (Psalm 8:1-9) 2026-10-05보기

October 4, 2026 Christian Joy (3) “Your Name in All the Earth” Psalm 8:1-9 For the next two weeks, we will reflect together on “the LORD,” the reason for a Christian’s joy, through the psalms of praise. First, we will look at the LORD as Creator, and second, at the LORD as King. This week, through Psalm 8, which praises the LORD as Creator, we will explore where the joy of a Christian comes from. We can find one reason why God the Creator becomes our source of joy in Psalm 8:3. The psalmist looked upon the beauty of the world that the Lord’s hands had made. Even when we look at the same world, what we see and what it means to us can be different depending on the lens through which we view it. The psalmist looked at the world through the lens of God the Creator. We can reflect on what kind of lens we are using to see the world through a question like this: “How (B) is (A)!” In this sentence, we can put in A the object we are looking at, and in B the emotions, thoughts, and attitudes toward life that arise as we look at it. Even when we face the same situation, our response can be different when we look at it with our eyes fixed on God the Creator. When we see how great and wonderful God is, we come to recognize how small our own thoughts, existence, and experiences really are. So, what kind of heart and attitude are we living with in this world that belongs to God? And what kind of heart do you want to live with from now on? The joy of a Christian also begins with the way we see ourselves. Sometimes we become discouraged, thinking, “Why am I like this? Why is my life like this? Do I not deserve more than where I am now?” But God does not evaluate us by comparing us with others. In Jesus’ parable of the talents in the Gospel of Matthew, both the servant who received five talents and the servant who received two talents were praised in the same way. What matters is not how much has been accomplished compared to others, but how what God has given us has been used. Therefore, may we learn to look at ourselves with a little more warmth and compassion. May we take time to reflect on what God has entrusted to us and see ourselves through the lens of grace – the way God sees us. When we do, we may discover a new kind of joy within us. People can also experience joy when they discover that their lives have purpose and meaning. Only God, who created us, knows our purpose most fully. Yet that purpose is not found only in something extraordinary or grand. It can also be found in the ordinary moments of our daily lives. Consider Boaz and Ruth. They did not begin their lives knowing that they would become ancestors of David and, ultimately, of Jesus Christ. They simply lived faithfully in the places and circumstances God had given them, carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to them. As they quietly lived their everyday lives in reverence for God, God worked through their lives to accomplish something truly remarkable. In the parable of the talents in the Gospel of Matthew, the master says, “You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Our ordinary everyday lives can also be the place where God has entrusted us to live. Simply being faithful in that place can itself be a life that pleases God. We are living the lives God has given us in a world that does not ultimately belong to us. When we come to understand this, even when life is difficult and painful, we can gradually begin to recognize that every moment we have lived until now has been a gift of God’s grace. We can realize that simply making it this far in life is itself a gift and an act of grace. And when we turn our eyes toward that grace, we will begin to discover anew the joy that God gives us even in the midst of our ordinary, everyday lives. Discussion Questions: 1. What kind of lens have I been using lately to look at myself and the circumstances I am in? Using the format, “How (B) is (A)!”, let’s go around and have everyone share one response. (A is the object or situation, and B is the emotion or thought that comes to mind.) 2. Has there been a moment recently in your everyday life when you thought, “This, too, is God’s grace and a gift from Him”? Let’s share with one another experiences of discovering gratitude and joy in God through the ordinary, seemingly unremarkable moments of our daily lives. Application Question: What do you think is the “small thing” God has entrusted to you right now in which He wants you to live faithfully? Let’s share how we might approach that responsibility with the right heart and attitude throughout this coming week.
