Christian Joy (5) Bread to Give Them Strength (Psalm 104:1-35) 2026-10-18보기

Christian Joy (5) “Bread to Give Them Strength” Psalm 104:1-35 The source of joy spoken of in the Psalms is the Lord God. However, God has not limited our joy to what is religious or spiritual. As Psalm 104:15 says, He provides wine, oil, and food, allowing us to enjoy physical blessings as well. Yet Christians differ from people of the world in the source, goal, and purpose of their enjoyment. First, Christians know the source of their enjoyment. Psalm 104:10 tells us that God makes springs flow into the valleys, providing water for livestock and enabling plants to grow. Because livestock and plants are available, people can also eat, drink, and enjoy an abundant life. In other words, everything in the world is a gift from God. Do we believe that not only the abundance we enjoy in life but also our disappointments and shortcomings are permitted by God? If so, try confessing, “God has given this to me,” in every circumstance of life. Whether something is great and wonderful or seemingly insignificant, our lives change when we recognize and confess that it has come from God. This is the joy of Christians that people of the world do not know. Second, Christians have a different goal in their enjoyment. Eating and drinking are not the ultimate goals of our lives. People in the world work and labor to eat well and live comfortably. When their efforts result in a prosperous life, they may be satisfied with that alone. However, as Psalm 104:1 reminds us, our goal is to live for the glory of God until the day we meet the Lord. We are called to live productive and fruitful lives. First Corinthians 10:31 says, “so whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Therefore, we must not allow eating and drinking to become the ultimate goal of our lives. Third, Christians have a different purpose in their enjoyment. Our lives cannot be separated from God's created order. We live within creation, cooperating with one another and maintaining harmony. Psalm 104:10-15 describes how God provides rain, how animals and birds drink the water, and how human beings eat and drink through the livestock and crops that grow with the help of that water. Through the changing patterns of day and night and the changing seasons, all creation lives according to the rhythms established by God. Verse 23 tells us that people go out to their work and labor until evening. Human work is a calling given to us within God's creation; it is part of God's calling for our lives. Therefore, resting, eating, and drinking are all the rewards of our labor and means of restoration that enable us to return to our responsibilities and fulfill them well. This is the purpose of leisure. For resting, eating, and drinking to become a source of true joy, we must enjoy them within the bounds of their intended purpose. Christians may retire from their careers and formal positions, but they never retire from labor itself. Labor means using our energy to produce fruitful results, and we labor for the glory of God. Therefore, although we may stop working in a particular occupation, we should never stop laboring altogether. Work and labor are means through which God grants us dignity. Even those who have retired can engage in spiritual labor. For example, they can willingly pray for and provide spiritual support to younger generations who are exhausted by the demands of their work. Then, how can we tell whether we are enjoying food, drink, and rest excessively? If, after enjoying these things, we regain the strength to return to our responsibilities, then we have enjoyed them in a healthy and sufficient way. However, if we no longer want to return to our duties, lose our motivation, and become reluctant to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to us, our enjoyment may have become excessive. When we understand that the work we do belongs within the created order established by God and that it is a place where He is shaping and forming us, we can rejoice even in difficult and challenging moments. This is because our eating, drinking, resting, and every other form of enjoyment in life are gifts and means given by the Lord to help us fulfill the purpose for which He created us. Discussion Questions: 1. Among the many things you enjoy in your life today, what are some that you need to newly recognize as gifts from God and give thanks for? Can you confess that even your shortcomings and difficulties are permitted by God, not just the great and wonderful things in your life? 2. Even after retiring from a career or formal position, we can continue to labor for God. What fruit can you bear for the glory of God in your current circumstances, and what acts of service can you practice for the sake of other generations? Application: What is one small, everyday blessing that you can recognize as a gift from God and give thanks for this week? Let us put our gratitude into practice through one specific action.
